Create Your Own Backyard Garden

When making improvements to your house and exterior, it\'s sometimes easy to neglect that space at the rear that we call the backyard garden. It\'s often a small area and ends up as a dumping ground for old plant pots and children\'s bicycles. It\'s the bit that we keep promising ourselves that we\'ll get round to tidying. If there is room, it\'s a good idea to erect a shed to help with the storage problem. After it\'s been tidied, you can set about making it more attractive and a relaxing place to be. If the sun comes round, it\'s nice to sit out with a drink or two and let the world pass by.

The area to start improving is the ground cover. Chipped and cracked paving looks really ugly. You could re-surface with some block paving or concrete. You may prefer to put down some raised decking. This could be a corner set aside for a seating area with a table. A gazebo would be a nice place to sit in the summertime.

Some people have a theme, such as Japanese or North African, when they landscape the backyard garden. There are retail outlets that sell materials with this in mind. Statues also add to the atmosphere. You can get pot plants or shrubs that would fit in with the overall theme. A small water feature would give it the finishing touch. Climbing plants can be encouraged to follow a garden wall.

If you have the climate, you could put a hot tub out back, and invite the neighbors. You will need a good and dry path from the tub to the house entrance. Set up a barbecue set and a bar and you may never leave! If you like tropical fish, you could put a pond in. It\'s fairly straightforward; all you need is the plastic mould, a water filter and pump. Then go buy some koi and aquatic plants and enjoy.

Of course, you could have a grassy area but that would mean higher maintenance. It really depends on what function you want the backyard garden to perform and how much time you have to take care of it. Gravel needs little looking after; just some occasional work with a rake should suffice. Some people prefer to put pebbles down. Tree bark chips look very attractive and will only need topping up now and then as it becomes displaced. Whatever design your backyard garden employs, it\'s your little kingdom.
